Queenslander
The Queenslander dates back to the 1850’s. It’s a practical design suited to the extremes of both our climate and nature. Built high on tar coated stumps, to prevent termite damage and to keep out snakes and insects as well as to be above the highest flood waters, these homes proved to be cool in summer but cold in winter!
Cool in Summer
The huge shades area underneath, wide verandahs, 5 metre high ceilings and straight corridors made the most of even the slightest breeze to keep the home cool. Characterised by pyramid shaped red tin roofs this design helped shape the Queensland character of a leisurely outdoor life. Original Queenslanders are protected today but despite their charm, are not the most practical houses for our lifestyle today. Single skin timber walls don’t keep out the noise and gaps in the timber floors above the shady underside let in cold winter air.

The Appeal
But a Queenslander has such appeal! And today with the use of modern technology DJ Builders and Son have designed and built many examples of this design, optimising the floor plans for our modern lifestyle while still maintaining the benefits of the original design without the disadvantages. We’ve got some great examples of Queenslanders that we have built to show you. Just give us a call.
